We worship God with our whole lives, and this includes our finances. We don't give out of compulsion or to earn God's favour. In Jesus we already have God's favour, so we give as part of our worship; our response of love to Him. At Elim, we recognise that we can give without loving, but we cannot love without giving.
The Bible asks us to give our first and our best back to God, and He will bless the rest (Leviticus 27:30). This "first" is the tithe, or "tenth" of our income. We return to the Lord the first 10% of what He's given to us, because it belongs to Him. The tithe is a very practical and tangible way to put God first in our lives. God does bless us when we give, but that is not our motivation.
Jesus warned us that we cannot serve two masters: God and wealth (Luke 16:13). We have to choose. Tithing settles the question, and determines that "I serve God". Tithing also frees a person up to be more spiritually effective, because Jesus taught that our spiritual effectiveness partly depends on how we handle our finances (Luke 16:11). No wonder Billy Graham said, "If a person gets his attitude toward money straight, it will help straighten out almost every other area in his life"! Tithing is a great place to start.
